New Circular Economy Business Model for More Sustainable Urban Construction

Circulair collaboration

Sustainability has been an important part of Woonbedrijf's daily work for years. In fact, it is one of our three result areas. Part of that sustainability is circularity. In other words: working with closed cycles. We prefer to build houses with materials that we extract from and return to a closed cycle. Waste' thus gets a second life and retains its value.

Start of collaboration
We started working circularly in May 2018. At that time, we concluded a cooperation agreement with A. van Liempd and Baetsen-Remondis. "The aim was to gain insight into waste streams and investigate how we can reuse or recycle as much as possible," explains Property Management specialist Raymond Heister. "We learn, develop and experiment together."

Reuse or recycle
Demolition, renovation and maintenance release products and raw materials. "Think of products such as window frames, door closers and sinks. In advance, we make an inventory of that outflow. What can still be reused in a high-quality manner is dismantled and stored at Gebruiktebouwmaterialen.com (GBM, part of A. van Liempd.) Where possible, we reuse these products ourselves in another project. Otherwise, they are sold to other corporations, contractors and private individuals. What cannot be reused in its entirety, we aim to recycle and, as a last resort, dispose of and incinerate. This is what Baetsen-Remondis does."
