New Circular Economy Business Model for More Sustainable Urban Construction

Circular (re)construction: harvesting, rather than demolishing

Currently, under the guidance of Stolk, we are working on 2 circular construction and demolition projects. Last year, Cluster Vastgoed already demolished De Krakeling elementary school in Vredenburg in a circular way. The Valkenhuizen swimming pool is also going through the circular mill. During the demolition of the above-ground part of the pool, the slide, fences, clothes lockers, steel beams and window frames and doors, among other things, were dismantled for reuse in other buildings. Other materials such as concrete, glass, wood and metal were collected separately and used as raw materials to make new materials. The pools of the Valkenhuizen swimming pool will also be given a new purpose: they will soon serve as basins for collecting rainwater from the roofs of all surrounding buildings at the sports complex.

Extra thought was also given to reusing materials from government buildings during the construction of the new sports hall on the Middachtensingel. The floor from the demolition of the provincial Prinsenhof building will be used in the new sports hall. Says Stolk, "That plan has been around for a while and, with rising raw material prices and long delivery times, is proving to be an ever-increasing win-win situation."
