New Circular Economy Business Model for More Sustainable Urban Construction

The CinderOSS service is envisaged as a whole service supporting the CinderCEBM and ensuring its environmental, social and economic feasibility. Implementation of the CinderOSS service depends on the industrial partners who have an economic interest in the implementation of the CinderCEBM.

  • The digital business ecosystem will be further enhanced by developing a standard-based Building Information Modelling (BIM) web library of SRM-based construction products and integrating this library into the digital business ecosystem. The BIM library for SRM based construction products will promote the use of these products among various actors, especially among end-users, investors, and designers, and will incentivise CinderCEBM by providing information on new materials, easier designing and building as well as monitoring of the durability and efficiency of SRM based construction products in their intended uses.

  • If a business model is to be feasible in different environments of its implementation, there is a basic need for a modular approach to achieve the appropriate flexibility. In the case of the CinderCEBM it is necessary to take into account the fact that, in different regions across Europe, the availability of input materials varies a great deal (e.g. in the Netherlands the recycling of CDW is already widespread, while in south Europe their use is usually lower). For this reason three different locations were chosen in order to verify the CinderCEBM in large-scale technological demonstrations accompanying with its economic assessments (Slovenia, Croatia and Spain), and simulation of Cinder CEBM will modelled in three further cities (Italy, Poland and the Netherlands) and simulated on other EU counties, in order to prove the flexibility of the model. Having a business model offering solutions for different problems, ample support for implementation is needed.

  • The overall objective of the CINDERELA is to unlock the potential for a resource-efficient urban and peri- urban construction sector by developing new circular business model CinderCEBm using SRM based construction products produced from different waste streams within urban and peri-urban area. By combining different waste streams and utilization of CinderOSS service the project aims to create new more sustainable market and new consumption pattern in construction sector. This includes the recovery of construction & demolition waste, certain industrial wastes, inert heavy fraction from municipal solid waste (i.e. heavy fraction) and sewage sludge from waste water treatment for production of recycled aggregates, manufactured aggregates, recycled soil and building composites (i.e. tailored mixtures made from the above-mentioned recycled wastes in different combinations and ratios). CinderOSS service will comprise four different modules, including ICT and BIM support platform for creating a digital business ecosystem to improve the whole value and supply chain and thus, more efficiently including actors, relevant stakeholders and building end-users confidence.
